LEGAL ALERT: NEW INDIANA LAW EXPANDS SMALL CLAIMS CASES

Effective July 1, 2020, Indiana has increased the maximum dollar limit on cases filed in small claims courts throughout the state. Previously, in most counties in Indiana, cases could only be filed in small claims court if the amount in dispute was $6,000.00 or less. Some Indiana courts were allowing cases to be filed in small claims court if the amount in dispute was $8,000.00 or less. The new law makes the $8,000.00 cap uniform throughout the state and will expand the number of cases that can be filed in small claims court.
