Legal Alert: Businesses Within the City of Evansville Subject To Mask Order
Effective July 15, 2020, the Mayor of Evansville, Indiana issued an Executive Order mandating masks in public in an effort to keep businesses open safely and prevent the spread of COVID-19. The Executive Order requires all persons over the age of six within the City of Evansville to wear a face mask when in contact with people outside their household in the following places: (1) indoor areas open to the public, (2) educational institutions, except where students and faculty can be socially distanced, and (3) outdoors where the person cannot maintain a distance of at least six feet from individuals not in their household. For businesses located in a building with other businesses, this means that employees should be wearing masks in common areas, such as elevators, lobbies and stairwells if others are present. Business owners should take note of several exceptions that may apply to their business. Individuals are not required to wear a mask in a building or office if they are alone in a room or if the individuals are working outside and able to maintain a distance of at least six feet. According to the Executive Order, a business may deny service to a person who is not in compliance with the Order. The Executive Order will expire automatically at midnight, July 22, 2020 unless the Mayor extends it further.
