Mandatory Regulations by FMCSA Become Effective December 18, 2017

The mandatory phase of the electronic logging device (ELD) rule is scheduled to take effect on December 18, 2017.  The purpose of the ELD is to capture and record the driving time of the driver and other data affecting hours-of-service.  The regulations require ELD use by most commercial drivers and businesses involved in interstate commerce when such drivers are required to keep records of duty status.  This may implicate agricultural businesses who previously were exempt.  Those subject to the new ELD rules must begin using ELDs by December 18, 2017, with very few exceptions.  Additionally, those who may have been previously exempt from ELD use under past regulations should take care to ensure they are still exempt under the new regulations.  Additional information on the new rules can be found on the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration website:  https://www.fmcsa.dot.gov.
